Scent Marketing in Singapore: Uses and Limits
A large meta-analysis found that pleasant ambient scents increased customer responses by an average of 3 to 15 per cent across the studies examined. That is a useful gain, but it is an average, and its size depends on how the scent is chosen, set up and managed.
Scent marketing in Singapore involves using fragrance to create a consistent atmosphere in a space, often through a scent machine. Hotels, shops and offices use it to make a space feel more considered from the first few seconds. Scent does not fix poor service. It adds to a good experience.
We lease and install scent machines for hotels, retail stores and offices. This guide covers where scent marketing is used, what the research shows, where it falls short, what the equipment involves and what to check before you start.
How are businesses in Singapore using scent marketing?
Businesses in Singapore use scent marketing to set a consistent atmosphere in customer-facing spaces. Hotels scent lobbies to shape guests’ first impressions, retailers use it to encourage browsing, and offices use it in reception and shared areas. Brands choose fragrances to match their identity, then deliver them with a scent diffuser sized to the room.
Hospitality has the strongest case for it. A 2024 meta-analysis found stronger effects on thinking and behaviour in hospitality than in retail, although hospitality results varied by research method and setting. Hotels compete on experience as well as price, and scent reaches a guest the moment they walk in. Our guide to ambient scenting for hotels explains how that works in a lobby.
Shops and offices follow the same logic at a different scale. A shop wants customers to stay and browse. An office wants a reception area that feels considered for visiting clients.
| Space | What the scent is meant to do | Limit to watch |
| Hotel lobby | Make arrival feel consistent with the brand | Fit with the property’s style |
| Retail store | Encourage customers to stay and browse | Scent that clashes with the products |
| Office reception | Make a visitor’s first minutes feel considered | Consider the comfort of staff who spend all day in the space. |
What does the research say scent marketing can do?
The 3 to 15 per cent figure comes from a 2020 Journal of Marketing meta-analysis by Holger Roschk and Masoumeh Hosseinpour, which analysed 671 effects from 64 articles.
That range is wide. “Customer responses” covers several things, including mood, evaluations and buying behaviour.
What are the limits of scent marketing?
Scent marketing does not fix a poor experience. The 2020 meta-analysis concludes that a pleasant scent alone is unlikely to turn a poor in-store experience into a great one.
The results are averages. The 3 to 15 per cent figure is not a forecast for any one site, and the effect size varied by situation.
Fit and familiarity matter. Effects were stronger when the scent matched its setting and was familiar to customers, so a mismatched or unfamiliar fragrance should not be expected to perform as well. Music matters too. Music that does not suit the scent tends to reduce the benefit, and the researchers advise matching the two in how energising or calming they feel.
More scent is not better. The 2020 meta-analysis found that effects do not rise in step with scent strength, so a higher setting is not automatically a better one. As a practical check, ask someone unfamiliar with the space to walk in and describe what they notice first. If the scent immediately dominates their attention, consider reducing its intensity.
Does scent marketing apply to offices, shared buildings and airports?
The evidence is thinner outside retail and hospitality. The studies cited above cover shopping, service and hospitality settings. The research discussed here does not establish how scent performs in offices, building lobbies or airport terminals, so results in these settings should be tested rather than assumed.
Shared and high-traffic spaces also raise practical questions. Many people with different fragrance tolerances share the same air; large or open layouts affect how far a scent travels, and someone must be responsible for settings and servicing. For these reasons, start with one zone, such as a reception or lobby, and review it before expanding. To discuss how this applies to your building, talk to our team.
What equipment does a scent marketing setup need?
A scent marketing setup needs three things: a fragrance that fits your brand, a room-sized scent machine, and a servicing plan. The machine releases fragrance according to its settings, helping maintain a consistent scent throughout the day. A scent diffuser made for a bedroom is not sized for a lobby or a shop floor.
At MScents, our commercial scenting service includes a leased machine, installation, a warranty, filter replacement and servicing, so less of the upkeep falls to your team.
Our commercial scenting starts from as low as $2 a day. That is a starting price, not a quote. A large lobby needs more coverage than a small reception, and the cost follows the space.

What should a business check before starting scent marketing?
Before you start, check the size and airflow of the space, whether the fragrance suits your brand and customers, which numbers you will track, and who will service the equipment. Before a full rollout, test the scent in one area and assess how customers respond.
Start with the room. Ceiling height, doors and airflow change how far a scent travels, so a lobby and a small reception need different setups.
Then choose the fragrance. Fit matters as well as how pleasant a scent smells on its own. Pick something familiar and simple that suits what you sell and who walks in.
If you lease the equipment, confirm in writing what the lease covers, such as installation, fragrance refills, servicing and warranty, and how long the contract runs.
Last, choose one or two measures tied to your goal, and record them before the machine goes in.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if scent marketing is working?
Compare one or two measures, such as time spent in the space or guest ratings, against figures you recorded before installation. Watch for downsides too. If customers stay longer but queues grow, the scent may be working against you. Our guide on how to measure scent marketing ROI covers the options.
Do I need to buy the scent machine?
No. MScents’ commercial scenting service includes a leased machine, so the equipment is not bought outright. Lease terms depend on the space, so talk to our team for details.
